Abstract
The thesis proposes a design for the implementation of smart grids in the electric distribution system of Honduras, which has a high rate of both technical and non-technical losses and has obsolete infrastructure. These problems cause continuous interruptions, overloads in transformers, and high operational costs, significantly impacting the quality of service. The research uses a mixed methodological approach, combining user surveys, technical analyses, and reviews of international experiences, to justify the need for modernization of the country's electrical system. The proposal focuses on the establishment of smart grids and the addition of robust technologies such as advanced meters (AMI); the technical analysis identified that transformer overload and excessive circuit extension are the main causes of losses. The findings obtained confirm the viability of of the proposal by demonstrating that it is possible to take advantage of the transformation that smart grids offer to the electric system of Honduras, hoping to increase its efficiency and reliability, while also making it more sustainable. The modernization of the system through Smart Grids requires a comprehensive strategy that includes: detailed diagnosis of the grid, gradual implementation of AMI technologies, training of technical staff. The proposal would not only improve the quality of service but also lay the groundwork for a modern, resilient electric system ready for the future challenges of Honduras.
