Abstract
Radiation exposure in X-ray facilities can present significant risks if radiation safety measures are not properly implemented. This study was carried out in the X-ray room of the El Progreso Hospital, Yoro, Honduras, with the objective of evaluating radiation safety conditions and compliance with international standards. Deficiencies in equipment maintenance, infrastructure, and protective barriers were identified. In addition, the lack of a preventive maintenance program and the absence of adequate signage in key areas were noted, which increases the risk of unnecessary exposure for both staff and patients. Radiation dose measurements and equipment performance testing showed that, although the equipment meets accuracy and repeatability standards, progressive deterioration and lack of maintenance could compromise long-term safety. As a result, the study recommends urgently implementing a preventive maintenance program, upgrading protective barriers, and continuously training staff in radiation safety practices. These measures will enable the hospital to comply with international and national regulations, minimizing the risk of radiation exposure and ensuring a safer environment for all users.
