Abstract
The project titled "Analyzing the Acquisition of a Transportation Fleet to Reduce Outsourcing Costs at SECART" aims to evaluate the feasibility of acquiring an in-house transportation fleet as a strategy to optimize costs, enhance service quality, and ensure long-term financial sustainability. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative analyses. Surveys were conducted with 53 clients to assess their perceptions and expectations regarding transportation services, alongside structured interviews with the Head of Logistics to identify current challenges and opportunities for improvement. Findings indicate that acquiring an in-house fleet could reduce operating costs by 34.32%, significantly surpassing the expenses associated with outsourcing. The project's Internal Rate of Return (IRR) was calculated at 63.9%, highlighting the investment’s profitability against a 33% discount rate. Additional benefits include increased operational flexibility, improved route planning, and greater control over logistics operations.
The analysis also underscored challenges related to substantial upfront investment and fixed operational and maintenance costs for the fleet. However, these costs are offset in the long term by savings from eliminating outsourcing fees and improving service quality, thereby enhancing SECART's competitiveness. In conclusion, acquiring an in-house fleet is a viable and profitable strategy that can transform SECART’s logistics operations, positioning the company as a strong competitor in the transportation sector of San Pedro Sula. This project offers a comprehensive framework for planning and implementing such an investment to ensure sustainable long-term benefits.
