Using problem-based learning to identify challenges in research skills in postgraduate students

| dc.description | Abstract. Students enrolled in a graduate research methodology course encounter challenges when conducting empirical work. The objective of this study was to understand these challenges faced by master's degree students and their research skills, utilizing problem-based learning (PBL). Employing PBL pedagogical principles, where the student is at the center of learning, 12 enrolled students participated in the course. They designed a questionnaire using the Likert scale, and data analysis was conducted using a spreadsheet, followed by the determination of the instrument's reliability through Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. The pilot survey was administered to the same students who participated in the study design, representing the target group for the subsequent phase. The results revealed a need for improvement in the administered survey, with Cronbach's Alpha at 0.438. Despite this, students autonomously developed the project, implementing PBL. The data indicated a necessity for students to enhance their computing skills, properly handle quantitative data analysis software, adhere to APA norms, and refine their writing techniques. Pedagogically, with the introduction of PBL, students exhibited active participation, demonstrating their capacity to investigate, analyze, and communicate their findings. Given the preliminary nature of the data, it is recommended to continue this study on a larger scale and refine the instrument until Cronbach's Alpha exceeds 0.70. | en-US |

El objetivo de este proyecto fue conocer los desafíos que enfrentan los estudiantes de maestría inscritos en la asignatura de Metodología de la Investigación respecto a sus habilidades investigativas. Se aplicó el Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas (ABP). En términos metodológicos, participaron los doce estudiantes inscritos en la asignatura. Ellos diseñaron un cuestionario utilizando la escala de Likert. Para el análisis de datos, se utilizaron paquetes estadísticos y se determinó la fiabilidad del instrumento mediante el cálculo del coeficiente Alfa de Cronbach. La encuesta piloto se aplicó a los mismos estudiantes que participaron en el diseño del estudio, porque representaban el grupo objetivo con el que se realizó el estudio. A nivel de resultados, se debe mejorar la encuesta aplicada, el Alfa de Cronbach fue de 0.438. Los estudiantes desarrollaron el proyecto de manera autónoma, poniendo en práctica el ABP. Los datos indicaron que los estudiantes necesitan reforzar sus habilidades de computación, como manejar adecuadamente softwares de análisis de datos cuantitativos, usar de manera correcta las normas APA y mejorar las técnicas redacción. A nivel pedagógico, con la introducción del ABP, los estudiantes tuvieron una participación activa, demostraron su capacidad de investigar, analizar y comunicar los resultados encontrados. Los datos son preliminares, se recomienda continuar con este estudio, a una mayor escala y ajustar el instrumento de elaboración propia hasta lograr que el Alfa de Cronbach incremente arriba del 0.70. | es-ES |
