Abstract
This study conducted an evaluative analysis of the impact of insecurity on the economic and social development of the municipality of Catacamas, Olancho. The research identified that a growing wave of criminality had evolved into a multifaceted crisis, profoundly affecting the social and economic fabric of the community. Key factors contributing to this insecurity included unemployment, pervasive poverty, an inefficient judicial system, and inadequate state presence. Through a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from surveys with qualitative insights from interviews with key actors, the investigation revealed that insecurity manifested in general fear, business closures, population displacement, and decreased school attendance, thus hindering sustainable local development and reducing opportunities for residents. The findings indicated that the experience of insecurity varied, with women reporting higher levels of fear. This research underscored that economic growth alone did not ensure well-being if fundamental security issues remained unresolved, creating a vicious cycle where fear inhibited investment and economic activity. Based on these findings, the study concluded by proposing strategies aimed at mitigating these effects, emphasizing community participation, institutional strengthening, and evidence-based interventions to foster a more secure and prosperous environment in Catacamas.
